Hotel Rwanda
We've discussed the Holocaust, shared information about genocides throughout world history and viewed Hotel Rwanda. This is your chance to express your opinions about the unit, specifically about the film. What did you learn or come away with a better understanding of after viewing the film? What moments were surprising, shocking or memorable? I like the quote from the journalist when he's talking to Paul and says something along the lines of, "People (outside of Rwanda) will see the atrocities on TV and think,'Oh my God, that's awful. Those poor people,' but then they'll just go back to eating their dinner." The journalist reflects on the state of mind of those of us who are so far removed from the horror that is going on that, yes, we feel bad, but we are also content to keep quiet. Is there something we can do? Is there something we should do? Lastly, any final thoughts or questions about anything that has come up throughout the course of this unit?

I learned a lot from the movie, like I heard a lot about genocide and such, but I never really saw anything about it. We read about it with Night, and watched this movie, so it's like you grow close to the characters and then to watch everyone who gets killed its really sad. I agree with his statement, about the people just going on eating their dinners; that does happen and it's not good. I don't know that there is much as we can do then the government. So, I don't really blame them because they don't know what they can do. I really liked the movie, and I'm glad I got to watch it.
ReplyDeleteThis movie made me realize how much we really don't care about people in other countries. I mean when the guys actually video taped what was going on and people never did anything. It made me sick to know that we went there and we only went to get the white people. It makes me really proud to be an american knowing that we did so much to help (sarcasm).. I've always been interested in helping people in 3rd world countries I've wanted to be apart of the peace corps my whole life. Seeing this makes me want to try so much harder to help people that wouldn't get help any other way.n I'm really glad they found the nieces also I started crying tears of joy when I saw them singing.
ReplyDeleteI think it was a good movie and to learn about. I didn't even have an idea what it was at first. Now i know about everything about Rwanda. I really don't care for this as much as others do because it don't effect our life in U.S. There is something we could do is organize groups and send items over there.
ReplyDeleteI think the one moment throughout the whole movie that sticks out to me is the scene where Paul and Gregoir[[spelling?]] are driving down the supposedly "empty street" and end up running into hundreds of dead bodies. That scene impacted me a lot, along with the scene of all the refugee vehicles being surrounded by people that are running from the Hutus.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, the U.S. and U.N. should step in during instances like this. If a country is known to have battling ethnicities, we should step in to prevent it before it gets completely out of control like they normally do. Some people are more motivated than others to do something about it, but we should all have that motivation and willingness to help others in need.
I like this movie. I really understood it, they didn't have to explain it or anything it just made sense. I learned a lot about something that I didn't even know happened. I just seems so insane that something like that could have happened not that long ago. I find it wrong and sad for what happened. I don't get why or even how anybody could do such a thing. Don't they realize that it is a horrible thing to do. I mean how could you get so many people to join you?
ReplyDeleteWell, I have watched this movie twice now. The movie is okay, it explains what pretty much happened in the country during the time. It just seems like the Tutsi just sat there and didn't try to fight in groups. They would run and fight by themselves. Sad but crap like this happens a lot. They did do a good thing by calling all around the world asking for help.
ReplyDeleteI learned that a lot of people are cruel. The most memorable moment was when I saw all the dead bodies. No there is nothing we as Americans should do unless it concerns us. Let other people fight their own battles. We don't always need to be helping people. I thought this film was a really good one. Thanks for playing it in class for the past couple days.
ReplyDeleteTHis movie was very sad and kind of traumatizing but the ending made it all worth it. This movie tough me a lot about what really happened and how bad it was. I think we should try to stop or end all genocide's. This movie made me feel sad and upset but the ending is good and kinda happy!
ReplyDeleteI also think that the seen that you were talking about with paul saying how its a good thing that they are showing this happen because then they might help but then the news guys says no they well say ooo thats bad and go on with there life's and i think that is what most people would do I don't understand how people can sit and watch this killing of people happen thats just not okay. I also am super glad that paul and his family made it but mad because they couldn't help anyone else on getting back. I think that the movie was good but i think that paul was not that good of an actor when he was trying to act all serious.
ReplyDeleteThe movie Hotel Rwanda was very insightful I thought that it was a very good movie in explaining what was going on in that time. I liked all the death I thought that it was good that they didn't hold anything back for the most part. Paul was a good husband it was good that he watched out for his family and everyone in the hotel. He had some tenacity to go out there and risk his life just for food that he didn't even know if there was.
